From the Double Eleven that just passed to Black Friday coming next week, business activities in mainland China and abroad have indeed been intensive recently. I saw that many netizens are already discussing preparing domain names that need to be registered and registering them when the platform activities come out. A few days ago, some netizens sent emails asking Snail whether the domain name registration platform should be registered in mainland China or abroad.
In the earliest days, if we were building a website and registering a domain name, we might choose a domain name registrar in mainland China, because at that time we didn’t know much about overseas information. However, with the strict management and various inconveniences of domain name registrars in mainland China, as well as the needs of some foreign trade projects, we will gradually begin to understand and use overseas domain name registrars. Gradually we learned about Namecheap, Enom, Name.com, Godaddy, Namesilo, Dynadot, Register, Network Solutions and other merchants.
In recent years, we have seen that domain name registration merchants in mainland China are also reshuffling. Some of the old brands such as Xinwang Internet, Xinwang, and Wanwang have gradually become indifferent. Then we see Aiming, Tencent Cloud, Alibaba Cloud, Western Digital, etc. From the price point of view, it is indeed cheaper than overseas merchants in some cases. Now, should we choose to register domain names in mainland China or abroad? Let me talk about my personal views here.
First, consider it from a price perspective
In the early years, we may have seen more domain name promotion activities by overseas merchants, but in recent years there have been very few (we have ruined them all, and merchants dare not do promotional activities). Of course, during big holidays like Black Friday, we usually see merchants like Namecheap hold timely promotions, and you can still grab some cheap registrations and transfer domain names.
From a price point of view, there is basically no big difference in the price of domain names registered in mainland China and domain names registered abroad. If we only care about the price and cost, we can choose either one.
Second, consider it from a policy perspective
From a policy perspective, it is true that domain name registrars in mainland China will be slightly stricter, including real-name authentication and other policy-related strategies that may appear later. Among overseas domain name registrars, if it is registered and used normally, we only need an email address that we can accept email activation for, and we can be a little more casual about address, name and other information. However, from a security perspective, it is recommended to use a real name, because if there is a security problem in the account that needs to be verified, we need to provide information that is consistent with the personal and actual account information. If it is fictitious information, we cannot provide it.
If we take into account policy issues and complexity issues, overseas domain name registrars will be relatively simple.
Third, from the perspective of domain name management
In the early years, it was true that domain name registrar management in mainland China was particularly troublesome. Snail still remembers that there was a domain name that needed to be transferred out of the service provider, and personal information was required to be mailed before it could be unlocked and obtained a transfer code. Perhaps for this reason, many old registrars in mainland China have declined, some new service providers have emerged, and the advantage of overseas service providers is that they can arbitrarily transfer out of service providers within the scope of ICANN policies. If transfer out is not allowed, as long as ICANN Certified merchants can also directly complain about forced transfer.
However, most registrars in mainland China and overseas merchants are now the same. As long as they are within the specified time, transfers out and in are relatively free.
Fourth, domain name investment registration platform
The domain name registration and management we may have considered before are mostly required for website building purposes. There are also many parts that we will choose for domain name registration and investment. For example, for newly registered domain names, we will definitely consider which one is cheaper. For some domain name investment and trading platforms, some merchants will force the domain name to be on their platform before they can display transactions (for example, Alibaba seems to require the domain name to be on Alibaba before you can submit a transaction).
Snail does not know much about domain name investment and transaction information. In short, when we choose this type of domain name registration platform, we must facilitate transactions, have low handling fees, and of course, have someone pay attention to the information and realize the transaction as soon as possible.
Finally, for some projects with bad information, we may choose to go overseas to escape, but Snail suggested that we should keep everything regular. When we received a call from the Information Management Office to verify the information some time ago, we casually chatted about the violations. Regarding information, if you really want to check some websites, you can actually check them no matter where you put your website. Therefore, we should not deceive ourselves by saying that the website is placed on an overseas server and the domain name is used by an overseas merchant. We just don’t want to cause you any trouble at the moment, that’s all.
