VPS Beginner Tutorial: Understanding and Using Xshell Client

Understanding and preliminary use of Xshell in our VPS novice tutorial. We first go to the official website to download the software, click here. You can also download it from some trustworthy websites in mainland China, such as: click here. We are just here to show newbies how to connect to a VPS through a client in the simplest way. Below we introduce Xshell through simple pictures and text. We have also written about the client putty before, you can watch [VPS Beginner Tutorial: Understanding and Using Putty Client]

I won’t go into details about the download and installation process here. Note that you need to choose the commercial version or the free version during the installation process. We can just use the free version here. In fact, there is basically no difference in usage.

The installation is complete, click to open, the interface is roughly as shown in Figure [1]

We start to connect to VPS, I will describe it in detail with screenshots:

Click "File" and "New" in sequence, such as: Figure 2

Then the following pops up, Figure [3], what we need to fill in includes:

Name: Write a word that can be distinguished at will, so that you can easily distinguish them when you have multiple VPS in the future

Protocol: Here we basically choose SS

Host: Fill in the IP address of your VPS here

Port number: Write the link port of the VPS, usually the default is 22. If the merchant has modified it or you have modified it yourself, then fill in the modified one

If you have multiple VPSs to link to, you can clearly understand the "name", "host", port, protocol, username, and description by comparing the pictures above and below. As shown below [Figure 5]

After clicking OK in Figure 4, the following is shown [Figure 6]:

Enter the default login username. Generally, VPS uses root as the username by default. If multiple users are enabled, enter whichever username you want to log in with.

Next, enter the password corresponding to the user name [Figure 7]. Here is the password corresponding to root. If you choose to remember the password, next time you select one in [Figure 5] and click "Connect" to directly Once logged in, you no longer need to enter your username and password.

Next [Figure 8] "Accept and Save"

As shown in Figure 9 below, you have successfully logged into the VPS.
