A few days ago, ByteDance’s cloud computing service Volcano Engine launched a public beta version of public DNS, using BGP anycast to provide faster address resolution for users in mainland China. Recall that in the past few years, Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, 360, etc. launched public DNS to solve the problems of slow DNS speed and hijacking of operators. Now that ByteDance has launched public DNS, I wonder if it will lead other small and medium-sized cloud computing manufacturers to also launch public DNS to give users more choices.
First let’s complain about ByteDance:
The good news is that if you want to test ByteDance’s DNS, you only need to modify it yourself, but we have contributed real-name information. The reason is that to open this public DNS, you need to register a Volcano Engine account, and then you need real-name authentication, and then you need to place an order to activate it for zero yuan.
However, the DNS IP address and supporting documents are provided directly after activation. In fact, these are all public, and there is no need to register for real-name authentication. I have to say that ByteDance has some pitfalls. Since it is provided for free, why does the official website force users to register for an account and undergo real-name authentication before they can watch it?
The following is the Volcano Engine public DNS information:
Currently only supports the IPv4 protocol: the primary DNS IP is 180.184.1.1 and the backup DNS IP is 180.184.2.2. Currently only basic DNS resolution functions are provided. According to the instructions of the Volcano Engine, the DNS will support DoH, DoT and DoQ encrypted DNS query protocols in the future. , but did not mention whether an IPv6 version will be provided. DoH here refers to DNS over HTTPS, DoT refers to DNS over TLS, and DoQ refers to DNS over QUIC.
Technical details:
Bytedance’s public DNS uses BGP Anycast technology to provide multiple access points across the country. When a user initiates a request, it is forwarded to the nearest node. This DNS will also cache DNS records. When a user request hits the cache, the resolution result can be quickly returned without sending a request to the authoritative DNS server. In addition, the DNS uses anti-DDoS attack solutions such as traffic cleaning and IP blacklisting. ByteDance also emphasizes that it will never use public DNS to hijack users.
