The phenomenon of this problem is: the root password, whether it is ssh or web management, prompts that the password is incorrect, but no one has changed the password. This phenomenon occurs because esxi6 began to introduce the root account lock function. After the number of failed logins reaches After a certain amount of time (the default is 5 times), the account will be locked for 900 seconds, and this time is cumulative.
So when your esxi management IP is a publicly accessible IP, you will suffer.
Just change the value of Security.AccountLockFailures to 0 in the advanced settings.
Turn off the Security.AccountLockFailures option to solve this problem, but this is not recommended because it is very unsafe.
Curve solution:
Configure the ssh key for esxi. The key file is in /etc/ssh/keys-root/authorized_keys. After configuring the esxi key and the root account is locked, log in to the system directly with the key, and then Just restart the ssh process. Of course, this is not a safe solution, because you can't prevent others from violently trying to access your password.
The most correct solution:
Configure the firewall so that only specific authorized IPs can access
