Quad9 is a free, recursive anycast DNS platform that provides end users with strong security protections, high performance and privacy protection.

Quad9 blocks known malicious domains, preventing your computers and IoT devices from connecting to malware or phishing websites. Whenever a Quad9 user clicks on a website link or enters an address into a web browser, Quad9 compares the website to more than 40 billion web pages and images in the IBM X-Force threat intelligence database. Quad9 also draws from 18 additional threat intelligence partners to block the majority of threats facing end users and enterprise risk.​

Quad9 systems are in more than 70 locations around the world and will have more than 160 locations by 2018. These servers are primarily located at Internet exchange points, which means the distance and time required to get answers to queries is lower than with almost any other solution. These systems are not only distributed in highly populated areas, but also across the world, meaning users in underserved areas can see significant improvements in DNS query speeds. The system is "anycast", i.e. queries are automatically sent to the nearest operating system.

No personally identifiable information is collected. The end user's IP address is not stored on disk or distributed beyond the answering device. Quad9 is a non-profit organization dedicated to the operation of DNS services with no other secondary revenue sources. The core charter of the organization is to provide secure and fast private DNS.

Quad9 has longer response latencies than Google's public DNS service 8.8.8.8, but Quad9 project members say caching and adding nodes will help reduce latencies. Phil Rettinger of GCA said that Quad9 focuses on privacy protection and does not record the address from which the request is made. It only saves geographical location data in order to track requests related to specific malicious domain names.
