Linux Debian system installs X2Go lightweight remote desktop and is faster than VNC

Our general users use VPS hosts for nothing more than building websites, playing with software testing and other tool needs. However, some users with special needs need to use the desktop environment debugging software of Linux VPS hosts, as well as many software needs to be mounted in the Windows environment. Because of the high cost, you will consider using a Linux server to build a VNC remote desktop environment.

There are many articles shared on the Snail blog about the VNC desktop environment. Judging from the user usage, it should have benefited many users in need. But there is a problem here. If you need to install the VNC desktop environment, it will take up a lot of memory resources. If you need to run Firefox normally and smoothly, you will need at least 512MB of memory, so the cost will be slightly higher.

Today, Snail accidentally saw the X2Go desktop environment, which is lightweight. According to feedback from overseas users, it saves resources and takes up less memory than the traditional VNC desktop environment. X2Go is a fast terminal service suite based on the NX runtime library. We can install remote servers and Linux or Windows client link software.

In this article, Snail writes an article about installing the X2GO desktop environment based on the Linux Debian system. Because Snail does not have some projects to use, it only ensures that the environment can be installed, but does not ensure that you want to run project driver or environment support.

First, update/upgrade the system environment

apt-get update

No matter which version of the system we use, the environment package must be updated before installing the environment to ensure that the program runs.

Second, change the data source

/etc/apt/sources.list

Edit the sources.list file and add the software data source path

# X2Go Repositorydeb http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main# X2Go Repository (sources)deb-src http://packages.x2go.org/debian squeeze main

Third, update and upgrade system files

apt-get updateapt-get upgradeapt-get dist-upgrade

We will then replace and upgrade the environment to the latest version. If you see if you are sure, enter y and press Enter.

Fourth, install X2Go

apt-key adv –recv-keys –keyserver keys.gnupg.net E1F958385BFE2B6Eaptitude update && aptitude install x2go-keyringaptitude install x2goserver

Execute the above script to install X2Go.

Fifth, install LXDE lightweight desktop

apt-get install xorg lxde-core

Sixth, install Midori browser

apt-get install midori

Midori is a lightweight browser that takes up resources and runs much faster than Firefox.

Seventh, install X2Go client and connect to remote desktop

We can download it from the official website and find that mswin is a Windows system. For other environments, we can find installation solutions by ourselves. We can go to another Linux environment or local system to install the client. When writing this article today, I used Windows. system, so I use the Win client X2Go.

I put it here in my own document so that the download speed will be faster. After downloading, install it on the desktop. There is no need to demonstrate it here, just follow it step by step.

Seeing the picture above, we need to add a remote desktop connection. Fill in our IP and user name root, select the light desktop LXDE we installed in the session type, and then save.

Eighth, log in to the remote desktop

In the pop-up interface, you need to enter the root password of the server. Then click OK and wait. We can clearly see the pop-up interface and the key needs to be updated.

Here I try to open the Midori browser and take a look.

This Midori browser is pretty good. We will study the specific other functions ourselves.

In summary, the X2GO desktop environment has been installed. If we need it for a project, we can install it and see if it is better than VNC. Choose a project environment that suits you.
