Red Hat announced that CentOS 8 Linux will no longer be supported and will be discontinued at the end of 2021. Instead, the rolling version CentOS Stream was launched in 2019 as a downstream branch of RHEL. Vulnerabilities will be continuously checked to make the upstream version more stable and secure. Servers running CentOS 7 are not affected. They will be updated in parallel with the RHEL 7 life cycle. RHEL 7 will end its last maintenance cycle in 2024.
But if you're using CentOS 8, what are the alternatives in 2022? Unfortunately, even if you find it, migration of the server application will be another challenge. However, here are some options to replace CentOS in 2022.
Here are some CentOS alternatives for your reference.
Rocky Linux
After RedHat announced that it would abandon the CentOS 8 LTS version, there was news that CentOS co-founder Gregory Kurtzer would launch another Linux branch based on RHEL packages, called "Rocky Linux" ”, just like he did with CentOS. I hope this time he doesn't sell the same thing to RedHat or IBM as he did before. Rocky Linux is an open source enterprise operating system designed to be 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Rocky Linux provides solid stability with regular updates and a 10-year support lifecycle, all for free.
Community Support: The community, sponsors, and partners have invested in long-term commitments to ensure the project remains in the community.
Easy migration: Effortlessly migrate from other Enterprise Linux distributions. We provide easy-to-use migration scripts for free.
AlmaLinux
Recently, the CloudLinux operating system based on the CentOS operating system and mainly used by hosting providers or VPS users was announced:
We plan to release a free, open source, community-driven, 1:1 binary compatible branch of RHEL® 8 (and future releases) in Q1 2021... We will create a standalone, completely free, fully binary-compatible operating system using RHEL® 8 (and future versions). We will sponsor the development and maintenance of such operating systems. We will work hard to build a community around the operating system, with community members forming a management committee.
Nonetheless, users of CloudLinux based on CentOS 8 Linux hosting solutions need not worry as they will receive stable and well-tested updates until 2029.
Ubuntu / Debian
Of course, whenever we talk about server operating system alternatives to CentOS, Ubuntu LTS versions will be the first choice. Additionally, Ubuntu OS is much easier to use and deal with than CentOS, at least for me. APT package manager installs packages in a fairly fast way.
Ubuntu, on the other hand, has a huge community that provides online tutorials and guides with the help of which users can solve various problems and obstacles on their own while running on Ubuntu or Debian Set up server-based applications.
The current long-term supported version of Ubuntu is 20.04 LTS Focal fossa, which developers will support with public support until 2025. If you want to extend it further into 2030, you can Paid options.
Ubuntu releases an LTS version every two years, while standard versions are released every six months and are supported for nine months.
