Namecheap resets account passwords and sets up double SMS verification to ensure account security

Today, I logged into Namecheap to see if any domain names are about to expire and need to be renewed (I have a habit of logging in to my account at the beginning of every month to see if all the domain names that have expired in the last 1-2 months have been renewed), and opened it as usual NC official website and enter the account and password, but strangely, I cannot log in to the account twice in a row (starting to sweat), and there is a prompt box that does not indicate that the password is incorrect, but that there is a security window.

Although what I saw was not a prompt that the password was incorrect, I was still a little nervous. There should be a problem with the account password mechanism. You cannot enter after entering the original password. You can be sure that the password is correct. It may be that the password is too simple or may not have been changed for a long time. It may also be because Two-Factor Authentication is not set up and the account is temporarily locked.

Step one, reset password for Namechap

It seems that the original password is locked and cannot be entered, so use password retrieval to reset the password.

The password retrieval method is still simple. You can use a known username or email, or a domain name in the account, and then retrieve the password. Here I use the username, and then after submission, a link to reset the password will be sent to my NC mailbox, and then I will reset a new password after activation according to the process.

After resetting the password, I logged into the Namecheap account again. There was no problem at all. I checked that the domain name was still there, which made me feel more at ease. It seems that a single password is not safe, so set up a double password (Two-Factor Authentication) and bind the verification code with your mobile phone.

Second, NC sets Two-Factor Authentication double verification

Snail followed the official advice and installed Two-Factor Authentication to set up two-factor authentication. Every time you log in to your account, a verification code will be sent to your phone. You must enter your password and verification code before you can log in. This should be relatively safer.

We log in to the NC account backend, see the picture above in the Profile-Security menu, and turn on Two-Factor Authentication.

The default is OFF, we click to turn it on.

Enter our information according to the prompts, and choose voice or text messages. Here, Snail chooses text messages. Then enter our mobile phone number and NC account password to set up.

When setting up for the first time, we will receive a text message, a total of 6 numbers, and then enter the verification and save after receiving the text message.

In summary, I was shocked when I encountered this thing early in the morning. However, by resetting the Namecheap account password and setting up double password protection via SMS, it should be fairly safe.
