OpenVZ Architecture

OpenVZ (OVZ for short) uses the core of SWsoft's Virutozzo virtualization server software product and is an operating system-level server virtualization architecture based on the Linux platform. This architecture directly calls the kernel in the host machine (commonly known as: mother machine) to simulate and generate a sub-server (commonly known as: VPS, small machine). Therefore, after virtualization, its performance loss is only about 1-3% compared to the mother server. . Of course, OpenVZ can be oversold, which means that a server has a total of 16G of memory, and it can open sub-servers configured with 1G of memory × 17 or more. Because its virtual architecture relationship is: it is not how many resources you allocate to customers will deduct how many host resources you have; but how many resources the customers use, you will deduct how many host resources you have, so the OpenVZ architecture VPS is relatively cheap. However, due to the overbooking factor, if the service provider continues to overbook endlessly, the performance of the server will drop sharply. Another feature of OpenVZ is that it directly calls the host's kernel, so some software cannot be used and some kernel files cannot be modified.

KVM architecture

KVM is a full-featured virtualization architecture under Linux. VPS based on KVM architecture does not have a system by default. You can upload the ISO yourself or call the ISO provided by the service provider to manually install the system or use the official KVM provided by the service provider. template. This is very suitable for customers who love DIYing their own VPS. Since the KVM architecture is a full-featured virtualization architecture and even has independent BIOS control, it has a greater impact on host performance. Therefore, KVM-based VPS is more expensive, but KVM VPS is more free than VPS with other architectures.

Xen architecture

Xen was developed by the University of Cambridge. It is based on complete partitioning of hardware. It can only allocate as many resources as there are physically available, so it is difficult to overbook. It can be divided into Xen-PV (paravirtualization) and Xen-HVM (full virtualization). Xen cannot be oversold. When the host machine only has 16G memory and 100G hard disk, when a slave machine with 1G memory and 25G hard disk of the Xen architecture (any virtualization) is opened, it will directly occupy the host machine's 1G memory and 25G hard disk. , so the performance of Xen is better than that of OpenVZ under overbooking conditions. Xen-PV: Para-virtualization, so it is only suitable for Linux series VPS, but its performance loss is relatively small, about 4%-8% compared to the host. Xen-HVM: Full virtualization, you can install Windows or freely mount ISO files to install any system. Since it is full virtualization, the performance loss is relatively large, about 8%-20% compared to the host performance loss.

Hyper-V architecture

Hyper-V is a virtualization product from Microsoft. Most VPS service providers in mainland China use this architecture, mainly because it is customized for Windows and is more convenient to manage. The current Hyper-V also supports Linux, but the performance loss is serious. Hyper-V perfectly supports Windows systems, including 32-bit and 64-bit. If you choose a VPS with Hyper-V architecture, it is strongly recommended to use Windows. Hyper-V currently cannot oversell memory, but it can oversell hard drives. Hard drives are deducted based on customer usage. Generally speaking, the host's hard disk will not be 100% used up, so don't worry about this.
