Google releases Chrome 68, HTTP websites are fully marked as unsafe

Google released an update to its Chrome browser, Chrome 68, on July 24. After the update, all unencrypted websites will be classified as "unsafe" websites.

This change will apply to all HTTP sites, which will all display the word "Not Secure" in the address bar. HTTPS sites will not have any impact. This measure, announced in February, is part of Google's push for network encryption. In fact, Chrome has set a warning icon for unencrypted login pages since 2016, and now it has further expanded to all HTTP websites. When Chrome's security product manager Emily Schechter announced the change on her blog, she called it a "milestone for Chrome security."

HTTPS is a method of Internet encryption that protects the connection between users and websites. Without this encryption protection, websites are vulnerable to surveillance or malware attacks. Since 2014, Google has allowed HTTPS websites to rank higher in search rankings. This is also an important reason why website owners are willing to provide encryption protection for their websites. According to Google's HTTPS statistics, three years ago in July 2015, only 47% of the web pages loaded by US Chrome users were encrypted, and now this has grown to 84%.

Google does not intend to stop here. Chrome 69, which will be updated in September, will change the original green "Secure" text on HTTPS websites to an inconspicuous black. Chrome 70, which will be updated in October, will change the "Secure" text on HTTPS websites. "Unsafe" warning is changed to bright red. In the future, the "security" label on HTTPS websites will be removed, symbolizing that HTTPS encryption has moved from a special security specification to a regular basic standard.
