How to deploy and install VNC and Gnome on Ubuntu 18.04 to implement a remote desktop environment

In this article, we will install the desktop system on the Ubuntu 18.04 system of the VPS host.

1. Update system source

apt update apt upgrade -y

We update system source files.

2. Install the desktop environment

apt install ubuntu-desktop gnome-panel gnome-settings-daemon metacity nautilus gnome-terminal -y

Here we can complete the installation.

3. Install VNC server

apt install vnc4server -y

Then we set the password:

vncserver :1

Then set the password twice.

4. Modify the configuration file

~/.vnc/xstartup

Edit this file and add at the end:

gnome-panel & gnome-settings-daemon& metacity& nautilus&

5. Start VNC

vncserver :1

Then we can connect, but make sure it is installed and then set the permissions.

6. Set permissions

mkdir -p /root/.config/nautilus

7. Restart the server

After rebooting the server, we can connect to VNC and start it.

vncserver :1

Then we can use VNC software to connect. (TightVNC)

In conclusion, there are still some problems that we will fix. But basically it still works.
