In the process of contacting our wordpress theme users, we found that many novices are confused about categories and pages when they first get started with wordpress. So here I will give you a brief introduction to their differences and their respective usage scenarios, so that novice users can quickly master the use of WordPress backend.

WordPress Content System (CMS)

First of all, let’s briefly introduce the content system of WordPress. WordPress is currently the most used CMS system in the world. It has a very powerful and convenient content management background, which can easily add various contents. Newbies who are new to WP may feel that The backend is more complicated, I don’t understand the role of each entrance, and it’s often unclear where content should be added. In fact, the most essential contents of WordPress are two: post and taxonomy.

Article (post): Contains articles, pages, links, image media, and various custom types of articles.

Category (taxonomy): Includes article categories, article tags, link categories, and various custom categories.

An article is generally a single piece of content: a piece of news, a picture, a link, etc., while a taxonomy is a collection of many articles: for example, there are many articles under the article category, and there are many under the link category. There can also be many articles under the links and article tags.

Category

The category directory is mainly used to classify the WordPress article system. It is more like a column page. There will be many specific articles below, such as common news, product lists, etc. Through classification, the website can be well organized. Article content is put into different columns for visitors to browse.

Page

A page is essentially an article, but it does not need to be divided into other categories. It is an article type at the same level as the category directory. It is often used for about us, contact us, etc. Page display.

Difference

From the above introduction of CMS system articles (posts) and classification (taxonomy), we can see that the two are closely related, that is, articles are organized and archived through classification, and the relationship between classification directories and articles is the most typical In terms of usage, we can understand the category directory as a column. We only need to select the corresponding category when adding an article to divide the article into that category.

The page breaks out of the restriction of classification (taxonomy) and is an article (post) at the same level as the classification directory, so it is not a classification (taxonomy), and it cannot realize taxonomy (taxonomy) such as product center and news updates. It has only one function, and the page is often used for first-level introduction and display single pages such as about us and contact us.
