After getting a new VPS, you can conduct some simple evaluations to get a more comprehensive understanding of your VPS. This article introduces some test items usually included in VPS evaluation, including performance testing, routing (including outbound routing and return routing), latency and speed, etc.
Performance
The configuration of VPS is the most intuitive attribute item, which usually includes CPU version, number of CPU cores, memory size, hard disk size, and hard disk type (SSD or HDD). These all directly affect the performance of VPS. In addition to these, you need to Also of concern include bandwidth size, traffic volume, etc.
It should be noted that for the same price, the configuration of OVZ virtualized VPS will be much better than that of KVM virtualized VPS. However, it is not recommended to purchase OVZ machines because there may be serious overbooking. .
In addition, IO performance testing is also a common method for VPS performance testing.
Routing (route)
Routing includes outbound routing and return routing, which refers to the line from your VPS to your local area. Route tracking simply means which nodes you pass through to get to the host (outbound route), and which nodes the host passes through to get to you ( return route).
Generally speaking, the return route is more important than the outbound route, because more of the VPS transmits data to you (either when building a website or watching videos).
For a more detailed introduction to routing routes and how to view them, you can read Lao Wang’s previous article introducing the differences between 163 backbone network and CN2: 163 Backbone Network / CN2 GT / CN2 GIA route concept introduction and VPS service provider recommendations.
Delay
Latency refers to the response speed from your VPS to your local location. Generally speaking, the closer the physical distance, the lower the latency. As far as mainland China is concerned, VPS in Hong Kong and South Korea can achieve delays of tens of milliseconds, but the delay of American VPS is generally about 150ms.
Of course, in addition to physical distance, the VPS route (routing) is also a very important factor. If it is not a direct route, the delay will definitely increase greatly. For example, although it is a Hong Kong VPS, but the route goes around the United States first, the delay will be average. It’s all 200+.
Speed
Easy to understand, it is the download speed and upload speed of VPS.
When conducting VPS evaluation, there are usually two parts: foreign node speed test and mainland China node test. More attention should be paid to the speed of mainland China.
Others
Others, such as the stability of the VPS service provider, whether it is reliable, TOS (terms of service), refund policy, etc., also need to be carefully considered when purchasing a VPS.
That’s all I can think of for now. If there is anything you need to add, please leave a message below.
