If we were a formal commercial project, we would definitely purchase a paid SSL certificate. If users or peers saw it, they would definitely be looked down upon. Including Snail, we often see some personal hosting providers using free SSL certificates. Although there is nothing wrong with this, what will users think if they see it? Therefore, for commercial projects, even if we buy a certificate worth tens of dollars a year, it is not recommended to use a free certificate.

If we are a personal website or just want to implement HTTPS, then which SSL certificate is used is not so important. For example, Let’s Encrypt certificates, which we use a lot, now also support pan-domain names. Cloud hosting providers such as Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud also provide free DV SSL certificates for one year. Some netizens asked before if there are other free certificates.

In this article, Snail saw that the GoGetSSL merchant provides a one-year free Comodo SSL certificate, and there are similar application tutorial articles, but it is not clear whether it is easy to apply now. Therefore, in this article, Snail also tries to take a look at the free Comodo application process provided by the GoGetSSL merchant.

First, GoGetSSL official website

Address: https://www.gogetssl.com/domain-validation/comodo-free-ssl/

From the introduction, it is free for one year, and subsequent renewals should also be free. It is estimated that renewal is required before the expiration of one year. However, I saw some early articles saying it was free for 90 days. I don’t know if there will be any changes in subsequent applications, so we will continue reading. Click Create New Order.

Second, registration and application

As expected, the free period is 90 days, but it should be renewable indefinitely. (It’s free, he has the final say)

We should be familiar with registering an account here.

After registering the account and logging in, you can see that there is a free Comodo TRIAL ssl certificate applied for in our backend SSL list, but it is not finished yet, we need to configure it.

Third, configure Comodo SSL certificate

1. Apply for CSR and KEY

Paste the CSR file that we need to apply for the certificate domain name. This can be applied online, or we can generate it in a VPS or server. It is easy to apply directly. They also provide online application tools.

CSR application tool: https://www.gogetssl.com/online-csr-generator/

Save the applied CSR and Private Server Key locally. The former needs to be pasted into the form above to continue, and the latter Private Server Key needs to be kept until the certificate is installed on the website.

2. Verify domain name ownership

Domain name ownership needs to be verified here, either by email or DNS. I chose DNS verification, and I need to complete personal information later.

We add corresponding alias resolution. Then we can apply and wait to see if the application is successful.

Fourth, download the certificate file

It takes effect quite quickly. After a snail went to the toilet, we saw that the application was completed. We can directly download the certificate to the local area.

Download it locally and we can configure and install it normally.

Don’t forget, the KEY file was kept by ourselves when we generated the CSR before. Three CRT files need to be merged.

Fifth, summary

1. It is still possible to apply for a free Comodo SSL certificate with GoGetSSL, but the validity period is 90 days and we need to renew before expiration.

2. The application process is not complicated. It is suitable for our personal use if we need free SSL. If it is for commercial use, it is recommended to pay.
