In this article, Snail wants to share the free backup function provided by DigitalOcean VPS host provider. We can manually back up the entire required VPS host into a snapshot. We can use it to restore data or transfer it to other data. Under the center, you can even PUSH transfer to other DO account users, and it is completely free. In this regard, DigitalOcean (and Vultr) is better than Linode (it costs money).

Previously, we are already familiar with the basic usage of the DigitalOcean panel, but we have not yet touched on the use of backup tools, so let's still demonstrate it in practice.

First, shut down DigitalOcean and create a backup

A – Shutdown

Before preparing the backup, we need to shut down the computer to avoid data corruption during the backup process.

The shutdown operation is simple, click POWER – POWER OFF, and then click the button to shut down.

B – Backup

Click on the menu Images on the left, and then on the right we see Take a Snapshot, select the VPS user name that needs to be backed up, and then pick a backup file name so that we can choose it when we need to restore it.

Then click the CREATE button to complete the backup. Depending on the amount of data we have, it will take different amounts of time to be displayed.

Second, DigitalOcean data recovery function

After we complete the backup, if our website encounters something unexpected, we can use the restore backup function.

In this way, after we restore the files selected for backup by Snapshots, we can restore the previous data without rebuilding the system.

Third, transfer backup data to other users and computer rooms

It is also important here. After we create the backup, you can see the backup list in Images. The first icon snail is marked and can be transferred to other DO account users. For example, we can transfer the completed system and website data Transfer to your friends and client accounts.

Secondly, you need to pay attention to the third global backup icon. We need to first transfer the backup to a data center (such as London), and then we can select the backup file in this computer room when we create a new VPS.

Fourth, create a new VPS and restore backup files

If we want to change the VPS IP/computer room now, there are several methods. The first is to delete our existing machine, then create a new one, and then restore the data. Here I will take restoring the backup to the London computer room as an example.

In this way, we can use the VPS data in the New York computer room we chose before in the London computer room, provided that we first transfer the backup to the London data center.
