How PuTTY remotely connects to VPS has been introduced before. For security reasons, some merchants’ VPS only support key login. Different from password login, key login requires configuring and saving the public key first. Today Let’s briefly introduce how PuTTY uses SSH key connection to log in to the VPS to achieve password-free login.

1. Generate key pair

Before using SSH key connection to log in to the VPS, you need to generate a key pair (public key and private key) on the computer. We can use the software PuTTYgen to generate the key file on Windows. For detailed tutorials, please refer to "Windows Generation SSH public key tutorial》

After generating the key pair file, we need to upload the local public key to the VPS that requires remote connection. The detailed tutorial is also shared in this tutorial ("Windows Generating SSH Public Key Tutorial").

2. Tutorial on using PuTTY keys

After successfully uploading the local public key to the VPS host, we can start using PuTTY to log in through the key to achieve password-free login.

1. Save connection information

Enter the IP address and connection name of the VPS (choose whatever you want), and then click "Save" to save the connection information:

2. Enter the connection username

Save the automatic login username under "Data". Generally, the default remote login username is root:

3. Link key file

Finally, link to the public key file generated in the previous step under "Auth":

4. Save connection configuration

Return to "Session" to save settings (you can log in directly next time):

5. Start connecting

Finally, double-click the task saved in "Default Settings" to connect to the VPS through the key file:

The above is the PuTTY password-free login tutorial shared by this site. SSH using a key can preserve connection security to a greater extent. Friends who need it can follow the tutorial in this article to set it up.
