Introduction to Vultr Firewall Group: Add custom firewall rules to Vultr

Vultr can have a firewall on the outer layer like Alibaba Cloud, Tencent Cloud, and AWS. However, the Vultr firewall is not enabled by default. We can manually add the Vultr Firewall Group (Firewall Group) and add the corresponding firewall rules to allow it to pass. Specify ports and protocols to improve the security of Vultr VPS. 1. Add firewall group to Vultr

Log in to the Vultr official website, click on the VPS details page, select "Settings", there is a "Firewall" option on the left, this is used to set the firewall group of this VPS (Firewall Group), there is no firewall group by default, you can Click "Add Firewall Group" to add a firewall group:

You need to customize a description for the newly created firewall group, as shown in the figure below:

2. Add firewall rules to Vultr

After adding the firewall group, you can add the corresponding firewall rules to this group. Vultr has two types: IPv4 Rules and IPv6 Rules. Generally, we just set IPv4 rules. Here you can customize protocol rules, ports (port ranges), sources, etc. Finally, click Add at the end to set the corresponding firewall rules:

As shown in the figure below, this is a set Vultr firewall rule. The functions from top to bottom are:

• Allow specified IP addresses for SSH access;
• Allow HTTP access from all IP sources;
• Allow HTTPS access from all IP sources;
• Allow local IP to connect to MySQL;
• deny other access together.

3. Vultr firewall settings

After adding the firewall rules, we can apply this new Vultr firewall rule group to the Vultr VPS instance to make the firewall rules take effect.

Also under Firewall, you can now see the Vultr firewall group we just created. Click "Update Firewall Group" to update the firewall:

The Vultr firewall group is equivalent to setting another firewall rule outside the VPS.
