The Document Foundation has announced the launch of LibreOffice 7.2, a major new version of the office suite with numerous interoperability improvements to better support Microsoft Office formats such as DOCX, DOC , PPTX and XLSX. The new update also adds native support for Apple Silicon (M1 chip), however, users are advised to use the older binary type for stability reasons.

LibreOffice 7.2 also has some new performance improvements when opening larger files, opening DOCX and XLSX files, managing the font cache, and opening presentations and drawings that contain large images. If you use the Skia backend introduced in LibreOffice 7.1, you'll also notice an increase in drawing speed.

According to the Document Foundation, new features in the LibreOffice 7.2 community come from 171 contributors, with 70% of code commits coming from just 51 developers employed by Collabora, Red Hat and Allotropia – all of whom are on the TDF advisory board members, and other organizations. The other 30% comes from 120 individual volunteers.

LibreOffice 7.2 Community Edition is released in 119 different languages, which TDF claims is more than any other free or proprietary software. It supports the native language of 5.4 billion people around the world, and an additional 2.3 billion people who speak one of these 119 languages as a second language.
