Linode VPS seamlessly upgrades and moves, keeping the original IP unchanged

After linode was fully upgraded again this week, both existing users can enjoy the benefits brought by the upgrade, and it has also added a certain temptation for other friends who are ready to buy a VPS.

For new users, you can just buy it directly. The only difference is that the new solution linode system is only 64-bit. If you plan to use a one-click script like llsmp, you need to choose another one that supports 64-bit. Scripts and panel programs that are not 64-bit compatible cannot be installed. For existing users, if you do not choose to upgrade and continue to use the original environment, you can still use it. However, the memory, hard disk reading and writing, and various advantages after the upgrade are still obvious, even if you choose to back up data and upgrade like a snail. After a day of tedious work like system and moving data, I still hope to have the latest solution to use.

If your original system is 64-bit or your scripting environment supports 64-bit, then you must back up the data first and then upgrade. The upgrade process only takes a few minutes (I am here in the Vermont data center in the United States) , it is said that the Tokyo data center still needs to wait a few weeks). If your environment does not support 64-bit, you need to back up the data and then move it in after upgrading. In this way, your website will be delayed for a while and cannot be accessed. There is another way to solve this problem, which can achieve seamless connection without affecting the opening of our website, let alone our original IP.

Step one, back up data

The original machine backs up data locally. If it is a website, we need to back up website files and databases. I won’t go into details about this and everyone should be familiar with it. It is best to use the packaging command. If you use the panel, the background should also be able to package and compress (how to use the Linux VPS tar.gz compression command). If you download files one by one via FTP, it will be very slow.

The second step, open a new machine

In our linode background, open a new machine in the same data center.

Be sure to choose the same data center and set up the environment for our new machine after adding and paying. Note: There is a new IP at this time, so don’t worry about it for now.

The third step, website relocation

To move the data and website backed up in the first step, we only need to import the website files and database, and modify the files that need to be modified. There is no need to modify the original domain name to resolve to a new IP, because your website is still accessed on the old machine.

Step 4, switch IP

This is also a critical step and one of the characteristics of Linode. After we ensure that the third step of moving is completed and that there are no problems with the configuration of various website databases, we go to the old machine.

Select ip swap to switch the IP of the machine

Select the new machine we want to switch to, and then just DO IT to perform the operation.

Finally, check whether it is stable

In this way, our newly opened machine will use the IP address of our old machine, which will not affect access to our website, and there is no need to change IP resolution. We need to check whether the data is still alive during the move and whether the website is stable when opening. If there are no problems, we can delete the old machine MOVE, and the remaining money will be transferred to our account for future machine renewals.
