If we have any users who are using or have contact with Linode VPS hosts, we must know that this time they have upgraded the memory configuration for free during their 13th anniversary event. From the configuration point of view, it is beneficial to our users, and from the perspective of the entire host industry Judging from the trend, many VPS server merchants may also improve their configurations in the second half of the year, which will provide a good improvement in the price-performance ratio for our users.

For example, we originally chose the Linode 2GB memory configuration with a monthly fee of 20 US dollars, so we can downgrade and choose the original 1GB configuration to upgrade to the 2GB configuration for only 10 US dollars, because our original 2GB plan configuration can now be upgraded to a 4GB memory plan, which is really possible A bit wasteful. Regarding the smooth movement of data, we can open a lower-level configuration plan, and then migrate it by cloning the data and retaining the IP. This can maintain the original memory configuration, but the cost is half the original.

Similarly, we found that if it is a VPS in a Japanese computer room, it cannot be upgraded to a new configuration, but it can be done by opening a new configuration (see if you can get the old account by luck), and then migrating the data and retaining the IP address. method, the new price plan can also be used. In this article, Snail (laozuo.org) will use Linode's powerful panel function to migrate data and retain the original IP address.

First, preparations

1. We need to open a new machine in the same computer room and with the same OS system. For example, our old machine has a 2GB memory configuration (requires a monthly fee of 20 US dollars, of course, it can also be upgraded to 4GB memory). If we do not have high requirements for hard disk and bandwidth, we only need to open a new machine with a 2GB memory configuration for a monthly fee of 10 US dollars. Just configure it.

2. For safety reasons, Snail recommends netizens who have not used the cloning function to back up the website data locally first. In case of an accident, it will be more troublesome. If we have used it often before, we are very familiar with it, and I guess there is no need to read this tutorial.

3. In order to distinguish the two servers in the following article, I will distinguish between the existing website server A and the new server B. Both servers need to be shut down before they can operate.

Second, clear the disk of the newly opened server

Because we need to migrate to server B, we need to delete the disk of server B first. We need to shut down server B first, then click Remove as shown above and wait for the deletion to complete.

Third, clone website environment and data

We enter server A, and then clone the data as shown in the picture above.

Here we can see that the cloning time will be estimated based on the data size, and then select the target B server to be cloned to. If there are multiple machines in the same computer room, we must be careful not to make the wrong choice.

PS: Remember that data migration from different computer rooms is also supported, but IP addresses cannot be reserved for non-computer rooms.

Fourth, adjust the disk and restart

After the data migration is completed, we can see two systems in server B, one is the existing one and the other is new. If our systems are all set up the same way, we won’t be able to tell the difference. Here is a little trick. Theoretically, the first system should be deleted, but what if there is a mistake? So let’s try restarting. If you choose the first restart, the restart will usually fail, but if you choose the second one, the restart will be successful. The one that succeeds is correct, so delete the first one.

Fifth, switch and retain the original IP address

We need to retain the IP address of server A and migrate it to server B, so see the picture above and click IP Swap in the server A configuration file.

Then select the server to which the IP needs to be migrated.

Check and then DO IT, thus migrating the IP.

Here, we check the new server B to see if the IP address is pinged and whether the website is opened normally. If everything is OK, we can delete server A. If it is not normal, then we should continue to switch IP and continue to use A. server. Don't be numb and delete server A directly. This is very important.
