For Dev channel users, today Microsoft launched the first preview version of Windows 11 — Build 22000.51. While most of the new features announced at the June 24 launch event have made their way into the new version, some features are still missing, such as support for Android apps. In the announcement, Microsoft also listed some known issues with this version and clarified the minimum hardware configuration. The editor upgraded it as soon as possible, and other things aside, there are basically no problems with normal work requirements. It’s okay to play a few games of League of Legends occasionally.

In the announcement, Microsoft was the first to admit that the PC Health Check tool was causing confusion. After the tool was launched last week, many users reported that their devices were powerful enough, but after checking, they were shown to be incompatible. Microsoft officials say the tool is not sufficiently prepared, especially in terms of detail and accuracy, as to why a user's current Windows 10 device is not eligible for the upgrade. Microsoft is shutting down the tool to address user feedback, adding that it will be "back online" later this fall.

Another key point mentioned in the announcement is system requirements. Microsoft says Windows 11 is built as "a complete set of experiences," taking into account the operating system's reliability and "people's expectations" when deciding these requirements. These requirements include driver models, experiences such as video conferencing, multitasking, and security. The three main areas cited by the company include:

Windows 11 raises security standards

Requires hardware that enables protections such as Windows Hello, device encryption, virtualization-based security (VBS), hypervisor-protected code integrity (HVCI), and secure boot. The combination of these features has been shown to reduce malware on test devices by 60%. To meet this principle, all Windows 11-enabled CPUs have an embedded TPM, support Secure Boot, and support for VBS and specific VBS functionality.

Devices upgraded to Windows 11 are in a supported and reliable state

By choosing a CPU with the new Windows driver model and the support of our OEM and silicon partners, they achieved a 99.8% seamless experience.

Compatibility

Windows 11 is designed to be compatible with the apps you use. Its base requirements are a clock speed greater than 1GHz, a dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, in line with our minimum system requirements for Office and Microsoft Teams.

As for the CPU requirements, the decision depends on these aspects, the company said, adding that it is "confident that devices running on Intel 8th generation processors and AMD Zen 2 as well as Qualcomm 7 and 8 series will meet [its] focus around security principles of stability and reliability[] and the minimum system requirements for Windows 11."

Interestingly, Microsoft will be testing Windows 11 on older generation CPUs, such as Intel 7th Gen chips and Ryzen Zen 1 CPUs, through Windows Insiders and its OEM partners, to gauge whether these devices can be upgraded later this year to that operating system. These chips, if added to the list of supported CPUs, will officially fit into devices like the Surface Studio 2 and other custom PCs running powerful hardware.
