Vultr will start charging for snapshot storage on October 1

When I was reading Vultr news today, I saw that Vultr will charge for snapshots, so I translated it and compiled it in this article. Vultr snapshots have been free before, but maybe they can no longer afford the free cost, so they will finally start charging. Charges will officially start on October 1, that is, next month. If you don’t need them, it is recommended to delete the snapshots in your account as soon as possible, otherwise charges will be incurred. But the cost is not expensive, the details are as follows.

• Vultr will begin charging for snapshot storage in October, with fees reflected on November 1st invoices
• Snapshot storage costs $0.05/GB per month, the same or less than other cloud providers
• Over 90% of Vultr customers will see their monthly invoices increase by less than 2%, and most customers will see their invoices increase by less than 1%, if at all

Why did Vultr make such a change?

Vultr now has hundreds of thousands of customers deploying millions of cloud instances. Because snap storage used to be free, users tended to keep old snaps in their accounts indefinitely (we get it - if it were free, we'd do it too!).

Unfortunately, these snapshots take up real disk space and are expensive to provide. With more new users every day and 18 locations around the world, it is no longer possible to provide free storage for the rapidly growing collection of old and unused snapshots.

We would rather provide our customers with more capacity in more locations around the world than spend money storing old snapshots.

How is pricing determined?

Our pricing for snapshot storage is the same or lower than other cloud providers at $0.05/GB per month. This allows us to cover the cost of physical storage and continue to keep your cloud costs low.

Should I still use snapshots?
